Why can’t my iPhone become my library card?

Well, the reality is it can, and some city and county libraries are already doing this, it makes sense. If you go to check out a book and you have unpaid library overdue notices or late fines, it will charge your iPhone, and if you have an iPhone app which allows you to do this, it will keep track of all the books you have checked out, along with those you’ve already checked out, and all of their due dates. In fact some of these apps now keep track of those due dates for you, and give you a reminder starting at three days before they are absolutely due.

That’s a pretty cool app isn’t it? Sure it is, as long as that information stays in your iPhone and no one else gets a hold of it. They often say you can judge a person by what they read, and I’m not saying you are, but if you were involved in any criminal activity, the first thing the FBI wants to look at is what you’ve been reading. Which makes sense if you are reading books on chemistry, but you work in a butcher shop, and someone suspects that you may be making bombs – well then you can understand why the FBI might want to figure out what you’re reading, as they put together a case. Are You A Brain-Eating Gadget Zombie?

It is hard to imagine now, but just over a decade ago we didn’t have PlayStations or iPods, nobody used the internet or even had access to it, nobody had heard of Twitter, the iPad was inconceivable and our mobile phones were so big you could use them as a dumbbell when you weren’t talking on them. Now fast forward to 2011 and our computers are super powerful (although never powerful enough) we can cram enough technology to guide a cruise missile (apparently) into a games console, and we can have gadgets in our pocket that are no bigger than a matchbox which hold 1000′s of songs.

So where do we go from here? I mean gadgets get cooler every year, both in design and in function, nobody could have imagined in the year 2000 the smooth lines of the iPhone 3 captivating the market like they did, but surely things are as cool as they are going to get? Well the poor designers and engineers unfortunately need to find a way to make things cooler and more interesting because that is the only way the company they work for can sell enough products to pay their salary!

They can’t just sit back on their laurels and admire how beautiful their latest creation is, because we’ll be bored with it in about 3 days time when we find out the image portrayed on the adverts isn’t really what life is like once you buy the latest and greatest gadget, and then we start lusting over the next shining object that is going to come out.
